    • Srem wine region

Sremski Karlovci, picturesque village placed on the Danube river coast, along with Fruška Gora Mountains on whose lower slopes spread its vineyards, belong to the Srema area of Vojvodina wine region. This is one of the oldest viticulture areas in this part of Europe. Grapes have been cultivated here for over 1700 years. The first vines were planted by the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius Probus at the ancient town of Sirmium. Vineyards have been part of life here for generations., and Sremski Karlovci was the wine capital of Vojvodina (North Serbia ) for centuries. Today the city and its environs has 35 registered mainly small family winery that produce between 20 000 and 50 000 liters of wine per year. When we talk about the types of grapes that are planted on the surrounding hills, there are most midle- European varieties : Italian Riesling, Rhine Riesling, Bouvier, Grüner Silvaner, Traminer, Furmint, Chasselas, Portugiser, Blaufrankis, Pinot Noir and Merlot. Also, have been preserved and many domestic autochthonous varieties like as Dinka, Sasla, Tamjanika, Smederevka, Kadarka, and there are newly created cloned varieties lake as Sila, Zupljanka, Probus, Petra…. so I honestly can say that anywhere in Serbia, you can try as many different wines as well as in Sremski Karlovci. There is one the region’s authentic wine originally from this city It is "Bermet", wine tha was exported to the United States even 150 years ago. According to some documents, it was also on the wine list of the Titanic. Bermet is an exceptional fortified dessert wine. It is similar to Italian Vermouth but produced in a different way - through maceration of 20 different herbs and spices. We will try some of its variants in the wineries that we will visit.
