South Banat wine areas

Vrsac and Deliblato vineyards belonging to the South Banat wine areas in the Vojvodina province. This is an area in the south east of Vojvodina between the Danube in the south of Vrsac mountains in the north and The Romanian state border on the east. It consists of three completely different geographic areas : Deliblat sands (the only desert in Europe), in the second dominate Vrsac mountains and the third is a classic plains of Pannonian Plain. The Deliblato Sands is the largest sandy terrain in Europe, once part of a vast prehistoric desert, having originated from the withdrawal of the Pannonian Sea. It is a home to many endemic species of plants which are rare or endangered in Europe. Also sandy substrate is favorable for certain grapes varieties, so wines from Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Blaufrankisch and Portugiser grape which grow on the black sand of Deliblato have a special taste.
The Vršac Mountains also known as Vršac Hill (Serbian: Vršački breg), are mountains located near Vršac town, very impresive independent and distinct massif, 19 kilometers long and spreading on an area of 170 square kilometers and with its the Gudurica peak (641m above the sea level) is the highest peak in Vojvodina. At the beginning of the 18th century (on the order of Empress Maria Theresa) here come the Germans of Alsace and Lorraine and founded the village Kudritz (today Gudurica), and delighted by the sunny slopes of the Vrsac hills expeditious begin to plant Rhine Riesling and to cultivate local grape varieties . For the next 200 years the area has become the largest producer of wine in the Habsburg Monarchy, famous for its white wines. Historical circumstances in the 20th century did not favor this area. Today there are about 2000 hectares under the grapes in this area. Most are planted Grasevina (Riesling Italico), Rhine Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Kreaca, Blaufrankisc and Pinot Blanc. The largest winery in Serbia "Vrsacki vinogradi" which owns 70% of the local vineyards is in bankruptcy for 10 years. Wines produced few of small family wineries that produce mainly to 20,000 liters per year, but they are all preserved the quality of production in which the Gudurica known, so worth it to go there and test.
